DEGREES:
- B.A., Biology and Chemistry, North Park College, Chicago, IL, 1970
- Ph.D., Biochemistry, Michigan State University, 1976
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
My research interests include the following areas: photosynthetic efficiency, higher plant pigments; soybean proteins as allergens.
COURSES TAUGHT:
- Bioc 101 "Careers in Biochemistry", 1992-1997
- Bioc 321 "Elements of Biochemistry", 1993-1999
- Bioc 431/831 "Biochemistry I", 2000-2004
- Agro 818 "Agricultural Biochemistry", 2001-present
- Bioc 432 "Biochemistry II", 2004
- Bioc 433 "Biochemistry Laboratory", 2004-present
- Bioc 221 "Introductory Biochemistry", 2004
- Agri 888 "Teaching Undergradaute Science", 2005-present
MAJOR PROJECT ACTIVITIES:
My major research is to determine if plant metabolism can be made more efficient under conditions of water stress. We are using a combination of biochemistry, molecular biology and transgenic plants to determine if enzymes normally present in plant cells can reduce rates of a wasteful process called photorespiration. I am also interested in professional development of undergraduate science teachers and I have been actively involved in NSF-funded projects to develop new laboratory exercises for students and new distance education courses.
