Description: This course focuses on resistance of crop insect pests, pathogens and weeds to pesticides and other management techniques. The course presents the evolutionary biology, genetic and pest biology principles underpinning pest resistance and its management. The role of transgenic crops in pest resistance management is examined. Students learn how to evaluate and design pesticide resistance management strategies.
Instructor: Lead instructor is Dr. Mark Bernards.
Delivery: The course begins with a two-day workshop to be held December 4-5, 2007, on the UNL East Campus in Lincoln, Nebraska. Workshop attendance is recommended, but is not mandatory, as the sessions will be taped and web-archived for delivery to distance students and individuals unable to attend. Following the workshop, academic students will be expected to complete Internet-based assignments and quizzes.
Requirements: Internet access and e-mail
Prerequisites: Individuals taking the course for academic credit must be enrolled in UNL's Graduate School and have completed 12 hours in agronomy or closely related biological sciences courses.
Text: None. All materials will be distributed at the workshop or made available via the Internet. Workshop materials will be mailed to distance students.
