Turfgrass and landscape management are key elements in the operation of every public garden, sports field, botanical garden, golf course, business establishment, government building, and private residence. People involved in turfgrass and landscape management blend their knowledge of turfgrass and ornamental plants with their understanding of plant physiology and management to produce “Green” areas that enhance quality of life through their aesthetic and functional uses.

Program Options

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln offers a Turfgrass and Landscape Management major with options in Turfgrass Management and Landscape Management . These options give students the opportunity to learn the scientific, business and the practical management of turfgrass and ornamental plants, which will better prepares them for leading careers in the Green Industry.

Career Opportunities

The turfgrass and landscape management industry is a part of one the fastest growing segments of the nation’s agricultural economy, often experiencing growth and expansion even during recessionary periods. The overall economic impact of this industry to the US economy is estimated at nearly $150 billion and the industry employs more than 2 million people!  With a degree in Turfgrass & Landscape Management , careers are possible as a:

  • Botanical Garden or Arboretum Director or Manager
  • Educator
  • Field or Lab Researcher
  • Golf Course Superintendent
  • Landscape Management Contractor
  • Landscape Management Service Provider
  • Landscape Plant Grower
  • Lawn Care Service Owner or Operator
  • Resort Grounds Manager
  • Sales or Technical Representative
  • Sod Producer
  • Sports Turf Manager

Internships

Internships are a key component of a student's academic experience.  They allow students to explore different areas within their major, make connections with future employers, and experience a professional work environment.  Turfgrass and landscape management internships are available across Nebraska and the United States.  Our students have had internship experiences with:

  • Haymarket Park, Nebraska
  • Augusta National Golf Club, Georgia
  • Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, Nebraska
  • Denver Botanical Garden, Colorado
  • Quarry Oaks, Nebraska
